Wu-Tang vs. Jimi Hendrix – Black Gold (Mixtape)

Logo

In similar fashion as his past project, Wu-Tang vs. The Beatles (no links, but if you Google, you’ll more than likely find a copy), Tom Caruana mashes up 36 parts Wu a capellas and collides it with some of the incomparable Jimi Hendrix’s catalogue of legendary music. What we’re presented with is a nuclear fusion of ill beats, rhymes and a dash of psychedelics. Tracklisting and download after the jump.

DAM-FUNK - ADOLESCENT FUNK

Dam-Funk: Adolescent Funk

“New” album recorded 1988-1992 - out now

Dam-Funk, to many, is a new name from the past year or two, but what we see and hear from him is a great deal more interesting than a new and emerging artist with a sound influenced from the golden era of electro-funk.  Dam-Funk is the real deal.  He has been recording for himself for two decades, developing his work to his own taste, and using equipment like the Korg M1, Linn Drum, and Casio SK-1 since the days when many other musicians considered them novelty electronics rather than instruments.

At the request of Peanut Butter Wolf, Dam went through many of these recordings, all made on cassette, going back to his teenage years.  As Wolf tells it,
“Dam told me, ‘this is your project Wolf.  Do whatever you want with it.  I leave it in your hands.  I don't even wanna see it til it's done.  Have fun.’”

The result is Dam-Fun's
Adolescent Funk, a 14-track album recorded between 1988 and 1992.  This was released October 26 2010 on LP, CD and digital.  Two tracks, It's My Life/I Like Your Big Azz (Girl) were released on 7-inch  at an earlier in 2010.  Click to DL: Dam Funk Adolescent Funk (2010).rar (146.17 MB)

Blazing back onto the radar with one of the most anticipated and long-awaited albums yet on Brainfeeder is SAMIYAM. Sam Baker’s Album is 40 minutes of deviant listening pleasure, a series of woozy, off-center hip hop instrumentals drawing heavily on Baker’s love of electronic funk but never obligated to it.
Intensely detailed and carrying considerable emotional weight, this is not Rap Beats Vol. 2, but rather an album of fully realized tracks that stand on their own, knee-deep in the groove and bent to the side. Sludgy, chunky beats mesh with organic sounds and fractured stops and starts, all coming together like the pieces of a demented dream.
SAMIYAM moved to Los Angeles from Ann Arbor, Michigan in 2006; in his short time on the West Coast he has become one of the city’s most progressive and recognized producers, a man who has helped spearhead the revival of interest in instrumental hip hop music. His album Rap Beats Vol. 1 was the first release on the Brainfeeder label, and SAMIYAM’s raw hip hop sound with a psychedelic edge and off-kilter beats could be called quintessential Brainfeeder style.

In the Blues Tent of the New Orleans Jazz Fest 2011, the most valuable player of Friday's (May 6) closing set had to be Gregg Allman's new liver. After all: No it, no him. And no deeply satisfied Blues Tent.

Looking fit and singing strong for a man of his mileage, Allman fronted a brawny, horn-driven band that sounded more Memphis or Muscle Shoals than Macon, typical of his solo work. The old liver, a victim of Hepatitis C, was swapped out about a year ago. Long may the new one run. Friday, multiple ovations met solos and song endings. A few Allman Brothers Band favorites made the playlist, but only "Melissa" would remind anyone of the version they first heard, on 1972's "Eat a Peach." The Allman Brothers favorite "Whipping Post," best known as a slinky 6/8 jam on disc and endless classic-rock-radio plays, was unleashed as a 4/4 stomp.

In addition to his new plumbing, Allman has been revivified by the reception won by his album of blues-chestnut covers released earlier this year, "Low Country Blues" (produced by T Bone Burnett, some keyboards by Dr. John). Friday, he was additionally bolstered by stellar guitar soloing by Scott Sharrard. Big, big shoes to fill for that guy, but he was up to it. Jay Collins' work on multiple horns, including flute, also earned earnest audience appreciation. They were the standouts in an excellent, supple, crowd-pleasing band.

The Blues Tent was a crowded as I've ever seen it, at least leading up to the set. There was gradual outflow, but everybody who stayed to the end enjoyed an inspiring performance by a slugger making the most of his extra innings. --- Dave Walker, The Times-Picayune

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, often known as Jazz Fest, is an annual celebration of the music and culture of New Orleans and Louisiana. Use of the term "Jazz Fest" can also include the days surrounding the Festival and the many shows at unaffiliated New Orleans nightclubs scheduled during the Festival event weekends.

CHARLES BRADLEY

No Time For Dreaming is the story of Charles Bradley‘s rise from less than nothing to current neo-soul trendsetter. Known as “The Screaming Eagle of Soul”, Bradley walked hand in hand with an unenviable lifestyle before finding a musical outlet. Bradley was born in the north of Florida in the college town of Gainesville and quickly moved north to Brooklyn. Growing up in Brooklyn exposed him to the saving nature of music. Here occurred the defining moment in Bradley’s life; he went to a James Brown concert and immediately began crafting his musical style. After he and his family were placed in an federal program intended to support underprivileged families, he found his way to Maine where he worked mostly as a cook for nine years. Eventually, he decided it was time for a big change and made his way across the United States, through Canada, and into Alaska where he continued to work as a cook. His time on the road was a grueling one, marked by constant hitchhiking and unorthodox confessions from his drivers (apparently one of them confessed and confided in him that he killed his wife and kids). After growing stagnant with the Alaskan lifestyle (no shit), he flew to California where he finally found some sort of normalcy. He spent almost 20 years in California where he made a living by cooking and playing local shows.

What else can happen in this man’s lifetime, you ask? Well, after being laid off from his job in California, he moved back to Brooklyn where he performed a James Brown routine under the moniker “Black Velvet”. At some point while he was in New York, his nephew murdered his brother and life turned into a bitter shade of gray. Finally, though, came the beacon of hope he was waiting for. While performing as Black Velvet, a representative of Daptone Records, a record company dedicated to reviving the feel of funk and soul music from the 1960s and 1970s, saw his performance, which was filled with raw emotion and pure talent. After telling his story to the people at Daptone, they determined that it must be put into music with the Menahan Street Band providing the musical backdrop. And the rest, as they say, is history…

That is just his story. His music gives listeners spotlight previews of his torment and strife. He belts with the utmost amount of soul that your soul can’t help but be affected. He traps listeners; his story is incredibly captivating and it translates uniformly into his music. You cannot help but follow his lead, no matter how dark and bleak the road ahead may appear. You feel his pain, his anger, and his relief.

Neil Young-A Treasure-2011

The 12-track live album, A Treasure includes songs – 5 of which are previously unreleased – recorded during Young’s 1984 and 1985 U.S. tours without the support of an album, or Young’s then record label due to unique and unusual circumstances. Among those, “Grey Riders” will be the first track serviced to radio. A Treasure features Young’s onstage work with some of the greatest artists in the history of Country music, including the late, great Ben Keith on steel and slide guitar and Rufus Thibodeaux on fiddle, along with living legends Spooner Oldham and Hargus “Pig” Robbins on piano, Tim Drummond and Joe Allen on bass, Anthony Crawford on mandolin & guitars and Karl Himmel on drums, among many others.

Nasty Nas in Your Area, About to Cause Mass Hysteria

Yacht "Breaking the Law (Judas Priest Cover)" on Sirius XMU

Who would have ever thought we’d be using the words Judas Priest and electro-pop in the same sentence? Thanks to Portland’s own YACHT, we can. The dance rockers are dropping their brand new sophomore full length tomorrow called Shangri-La, and in promotion have just stopped by SIRIUS XMU and recorded a session where they cover Judas Priest’s bad ass, fuck the system anthem “Breaking The Law.”
