Questlove on Fela

Questlove Brings Fela to the Masses

“It’s the story of Hip Hop.  It’s the story of taking nothing and turning it into something,” explains ?uestlove (of the Roots) who is now the celebrated associate producer on the hit musical Fela! on Broadway.  Knitting Factory Records is proud to release the first of the long-awaited vinyl reissues from the Fela Kuti catalog.  This is the first in a series of curated vinyl box sets.  The box includes six Fela Kuti albums that were handpicked by ?uestlove of The ROOTS.  The artwork for each album is painstakingly recreated original album artwork along with vintage vinyl label artwork.  What’s more is that this release marks the first time that some of these Fela Kuti albums have been released on vinyl domestically.
Knitting Factory Records Released earlier this year Fela Kuti Power Show Box Set
In 2010, we saw the re-release of 34 Fela Kuti albums dating back to records that were originally released in 1969.  2011 will see the continuation of sharing Fela’s art with the world, starting with Knitting Factory Record’s January 18th release of the final set of re-released CDs in a set titled Power Show.
Power Show includes 10 albums (on 7 CDs) spanning from 1979 to Fela Kuti’s last album, Underground System, originally released in 1992.  It was during this era that Fela consistently toured on the international circuit, bringing Afrobeat to the world. This period also coincides with severe political turmoil in Fela’s Nigerian home and is unsurprisingly reflected in Fela’s music.  Starting with Unknown Soldier (1979) and Coffin For Head Of State (1980), which directly address the fatal attack by the Nigerian army on Kalakuta Republic, to Teacher Don’t Teach Me Nonsense (1986), which criticizes the government as a corrupt teacher, to later albums which descriptively question ethics and policies related to past and modern colonization via capitalism.  Fela’s political statements also began to expand beyond Africa Fela phototo the U.N. as on Beasts Of No Nation.  Fela’s compositions grew more complex, the songs longer but no less funky.  Many Fela fans feel this era holds some of his crowning achievements – like the masterfully produced Teacher Don’t Teach Me Nonsense or the political powerhouse I.T.T.

ORGONE dropped Cali Fever, their second album for Ubiquity earlier this year. They have also played a ton of dates including Jazz Fest, the High Sierra Festival, been touring with the Roots, and Greyboy Allstars, and opening for bands as varied asSnoop DoggSharon Jones and Gil Scott-Heron. With new management pushing Orgone out to as many dates as they can handle, the band have been selling out of merch on every road trip - so they decided that it was time for a new album for their newfound and rapidly expanding fanbase. Somehow, amidst their insane schedule they have put together a brand new, exclusive and all-instrumental album for Ubiquity called Killion Vaults.

Zapp & Roger... get u sum

roger troutman 01

SINGLES:
…and as a bonus, TEPR homage to Midnight Hour.
One of the most underrated funk groups of the 1980s, Zapp revolutionized the computer pop of electro with their trademark vocoder talk boxes and bumping grooves, emulating the earthier side of Princeand Cameo, with a leader in Roger Troutman who was more than efficient at polished production. The family group, with brothers Roger, Lester, Larry, and Tony Troutman, grew up in Hamilton, Ohio, influenced by hometown heroes the Ohio Players as well as Parliament and other funk groups. Tony was the first to begin recording, with an obscure single for Gram-O-Phon Records, "I Truly Love You," which scraped the R&B charts in 1976. Joined by his brothers (with Roger on vocals and guitar, Lester on drums, Larry on percussion and himself contributing bass) and christened Zapp, the group played around the Midwest and gradually picked up backing vocalists (Bobby Glover, Jannetta Boyce), keyboard players (Greg Jackson, Sherman Fleetwood) and a horn section (Eddie Barber, Jerome Derrickson, Mike Warren).

o73881r771h.jpgZapp's following quickly gained notices, and Bootsy Collins himself was hired on to work with the group on their debut album. Released in 1980, Zapp hit the Top 20 on the pop charts, thanks to the single "More Bounce to the Ounce." The following year, Roger worked on Funkadelic's The Electric Spanking of War Babies and released his solo debut album, The Many Facets of Roger. His special cover of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," complete with vocoderized talk box, pushed the album into gold territory (as Zapp had done). Zapp II appeared in 1982 and proved just as popular as the group's first, including Zapp's only number one R&B single, "Dance Floor."

Innovative funkster Roger Troutman was the master of the vocoder — a keyboard synthesizer that created robotic-sounding vocals through the simultaneous use of a piano-like interface and a breath controller (breath tube), somewhat like a guitar talk box. What James Jamerson did for the bass, Jimi Hendrix for the guitar, and Stevie Wonder for the harmonica, Troutman did for the vocoder. As a member of Zapp, a band that included his brothers Larry, Lester, and Tony, and recording under the solo moniker of Roger, he helped define and give life to a difficult-to-play instrument that previously was used for gimmicky effects and, as played by others, was basically devoid of personality. With his winning smile and charming playfulness, Troutman was a favorite on stage and record. He'd often bring his vocoder along on radio interviews, treating the listeners to his amazing vocoder skills.

Though Roger and/or Zapp hit the R&B charts frequently during the rest of the late '80s, the unit had effectively halted recording with the 1991 Roger LP Bridging The Gap. Roger continued to produce and play with other artists, and it was his talk box that graced Dr. Dre & 2Pac's Top Ten 1996 single "California Love." The 1993 Roger & Zapp collection All The Greatest Hits sold well, earning the collective their first platinum record. The Zapp story ended in tragedy on April 25, 1999 when Roger was shot to death by Larry, who then turned the gun on himself. — John Bush
